Oxford Balboa is delighted to announce a SlowBal workshop taught by Yulia and Iacopo, followed by our monthly afternoon of social dancing, Balboa Beckons.

11.45: Doors open
12.00-14.15 SlowBal refresher workshop (with short water break in the middle): suitable for fast beginners as well as those who already know and love SlowBal
14:15-18:00: Balboa Beckons: an afternoon of social balboa dancing: all levels welcome
SlowBal as its name implies is danced to slower music,and is a wonderful flowy, sinuous dance: if you don't know it already we think you will love it

Teachers
Yulia Dakina discovered Balboa in 2010 and has been fascinated by the dance ever since. A six-time Pure Balboa Classic champion and two-time California Balboa Classic winner, she has spent years studying, competing and teaching internationally. Her approach combines respect for Balboa’s history and legacy with a belief that understanding the tradition gives us the freedom to make the dance our own. She is particularly drawn to rhythmic precision, musicality, and the subtle dynamics of lead and follow - how partners communicate, respond and create together.
Iacopo Longo started his swing dance journey in 2017, quickly channeling his passion into Balboa and Slow Balboa. Iacopo excels at breaking down rhythms and mechanics into intuitive, bite-sized concepts. Known for his keen eye for detail and passionate teaching style, he brings warmth, precision, and unmistakable Italian enthusiasm to every workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What to wear?

You need to wear something comfortable which allows you to move freely and won’t hurt or hinder anyone else. Bear in mind that the dance is close-partnered so please don’t wear e.g. bracelets or watches that might snag on clothes. Shoes need to be slippy-soled (slick leather is good, trainers are not) and must be able to stay on your feet! Follows often dance in heels but it is fine to dance in flat shoes.
- What should I bring?

A bottle of water. We provide mugs if you want tea or coffee but you are welcome to bring your own.
- Do I need to bring a partner?

No partner is needed. In classes we rotate partners, but you are free to keep in a fixed pair if you prefer.
- Do I need any dance experience?

No dance experience is needed for our beginners' classes. Classes are run in 6-week modules. We suggest that complete beginners start no later than week 2 of any block. For workshops the dance level is specified in the workshop description. For our social events all levels are welcome !
- What is the difference between lead and follow?

Balboa is a partnered dance. The lead role generally sets the direction, speed and initiates moves, and the follow responds and has plenty of opportunity for musicality and improvisation.
- Can I both lead and follow?

You can learn either role and many people can dance both. It is easier to stick to the same role until you have mastered at least the basics.
